Treatments and Cures
When having Morquio's Syndrome, one may have to go through many surgeries and treatments, not to mention therapy for surgery recovery. During the process of the Morquio's Syndrome, the body will have to undergo many surgeries to help make waking more uncomfortable and moving with ease. These surgeries can go from total knee and hip replacements to a cervical spinal fusion. Although there are many surgeries to help people who have Morquio's Syndrome, scientists and doctors are still researching and testing many cures for this disease. Until then, therapies such as enzyme replacement can make a big difference in one's life. (Stephanie Santillanez) |
Morquio's SyndromeWhat is it?
Morquio's syndrome is a rare disease that comes from the Mucopolysaccharidoses root. This disease occurs when one's body is unable to produce enough of lysosomal enzymes. Without these specific enzymes, waste in the body cannot escape from cells making more room for uneeded things. With unwanted waste filling up cells, enlarged organs occur stunting growth causing less outer body space for these growing organs, (Stephanie Santillanez) How can you get Morquio's syndrome?
Because Morquio's Syndrome it not like a disease that you can get from someone and spread around, you can only get it when you are born. Both the mom and the dad of the children have to carry that trait of Morquio's Syndrome. This means that the children will have 1 in 4 chance of getting this gene. "If both parents carry the defective gene related to this condition, each of their children has a 25% chance of developing the disease."(http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/001206.htm#1) Therefore, the only possible known way for someone to get Morquio's sydrome is in a recessive gene in a parent. |
How does it affect people? When having Morquio's Syndrome, people are affected a lot and it is quite obvious based on their outer appearance. One usually has a short structure such as dwarfism, and doesn't really grow as much as other people. Sometimes, they lose nerves and that is really bad because it hurt really bad and the nerves don't feel what is happening, although intelligance remains normal. You also don't get all the enzymes that are needed. " Enzymes are complex proteins that cause a specific chemical change in all parts of the body."(http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/002353.htm#1). That is how Morquio's Syndrome it affects people. |
